Scope
|
El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the most dominant air-sea interaction phenomenon in the tropical Pacific, which has an interannual timescale of two to seven year period. It has been pointed out that the ENSO is related to various phenomena of shorter (e.g., intraseasonal) and longer (e.g., quasidecadal to multidecadal) timescales as well as phenomena of various spatial scales. In addition to a linkage between ENSO and other weather and climate phenomena of the tropics, relationships among ENSO and atmospheric and oceanic variations in other basins including mid to high latitudes have been discussed in past studies. Effects of land such as coastal landform have been also indicated. ENSO and related phenomena strongly affect weather and climate in the wide area including Japan. To understand deeply the variabilities of ENSO and related phenomena, promotion of cooperation between various fields of weather and climate studies is required. In this session, presentations and discussions about ENSO, MJO, typhoon, quasi-decadal to multidecadal variations and other related phenomena by various researchers of atmosphere and ocean, weather and climate, and tropics and extra-tropics, will be carried out to promote spatial and temporal multi-scale air-sea interaction phenomena in the tropical Pacific. Any study methods are welcome.
