Scope
|
Promotion of ocean science and its expertise is indispensable for responding to requirement by public such as projection and mitigation of climate change, conservation of global environment and prevention and reduction of natural hazards. The fundamental of the ocean science promotion is a well-designed plan for facilities and equipments with financial support: i.e., research vessels as the core, along with satellites collecting data from space, buoys taking samples from sea water and computers carrying out numerical simulations.
Scientists of young generation are key players for pioneering future of ocean science, and they are attracted by epoch-making research or so-called breakthrough research, and look for its capacity. It is clear that a foreseeing idea in individuals is the seed for such research, while the supporting environment is realized by high-level equipments, as well as maintenance of research organizations and working conditions.
The ocean science expertise has been trying to establish this basis by improving greatly the large-scale plan approved by Science Council of Japan with a roadmap at a time scale of 20 years. Enlightening feedback is sought between ocean science and the related disciplines, atmospheric science, hydrology, limnology and biology, and hence, this session is proposed to Japan Geoscience Union.
