Scope
|
Since its operation from 2001, the Equatorial Atmosphere Radar (EAR), which has excellent capabilities to observe wind and turbulence in the lower atmosphere and electromagnetic irregularities in the ionosphere, has revealed numerous phenomena in the equatorial atmosphere. However, owing to the limitation of instrumentation of the EAR, phenomena such as three-dimensional structure of turbulence, gravity wave breaking in the mesosphere, electron density variations in the ionosphere, are not well observed or understood even now. In the session, the outcomes from the EAR observations are reviewed. Further, development plan of the Equatorial Imaging Radar (EIR), which uncovers the phenomena that the EAR cannot measure, is discussed in order to bring a major breakthrough to both atmospheric and space sciences.
