Scope Contemporary society uses almost all the elements present in the natural world. Although there have long been calls for the sustainable use of the resources that provide these elements and the building of human societies that are in harmony with the environment, the survival of the human race is increasingly at risk as a result of qualitative changes to the environment as a whole. The International Council for Science is integrating international collaborative research on the global environment (WCRP, DIVERSITAS, IGBP, IHDP) under the Future Earth initiative. The Council is issuing a strong call for the creation of an innovative natural science that incorporates the humanities and social sciences in order to create societies that ensure the security of the human environment. Implementation by society of methodologies for diagnosing and tracking these various elements of the natural environment and their relationships with humans are now required. Because stable isotopes behave like the fingerprints of elements, they are used in research including the atmospheric water cycle, food chain analysis, and human history. Their use has given rise to the fields such as isotope hydrology, isotope ecology, and isotope archeology. The development of integrated methodologies for elucidating the links in the chain of environmental factors based on information on concentrations of multiple elements and their stable isotope ratios, and the application to eco-labeling and monitoring will be vital to the success of the Future Earth initiative. We propose a session to prepare for establishment of Isotope Environmental Science that will serve as the scientific foundation for an overall environmental quality traceability system founded on the precautionary principle.
