Scope The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake has given us some important lessons. We should realize that giant earthquakes with the magnitude of up to 9 can take place even around Japan. In addition, in order to consider such giant earthquakes, it is necessary to pay much more attention to knowledge in the fields of paleoseismology, geology and so on. On the basis of such lessons from the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, reappraisal of estimations of strong ground motion and tsunamis is being conducted for giant earthquakes expected at the Nankai trough and other regions. Though scientific knowledge is limited, it is important to know basic ideas behind the present estimations and to discuss them scientifically and openly. This is the purpose of this session. We widely invite contributions on prediction of strong ground motion and tsunamis from giant earthquakes.
