Scope The proposed session offers an introduction to the latest advances in marine ecosystem modelling research in Japan, which involve a wide range of geophysical, biogeochemical ichthyological applications beyond conventional approaches to marine ecosystem studies. Marine ecosystem models in the present-day are developed with the latest theories from physiology of microbes to migration of fish etc, and incorporates sophisticated biogeochemical processes coupled into an ocean circulation model driven by atmospheric dynamics. This implies that interactions between biology and geochemistry or even physics, which has been relatively difficult to assess in earlier days, can now be tackled using a full range of knowledge from these disciplines. As a result, the recent marine ecosystem modelling research has been rapidly grown to reveal new insights as a part of earth system science, and thus breaking a dawn of new age in marine ecosystem research. In this session, we aim to introduce such remarkable advances in marine ecosystem modelling works to wider audiences in relevant earth system or geoscience communities in order to foster vigorous communications within and beyond conventional marine ecosystem communities.
